How to read your tyre size
Every tyre has a code on its sidewall. Here is exactly what each part means so you can order the right tyre with confidence.
Hover or tap each number to see what it means
Section Width
The width of the tyre from sidewall to sidewall in millimetres. A bigger number means a wider tyre.
Aspect Ratio
The height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the width. 55 means the height is 55% of 205mm. Lower numbers give a sportier, lower profile look.
Construction
R stands for Radial, which is the construction type used on almost all modern tyres. You will nearly always see R here.
Rim Diameter
The diameter of the wheel rim the tyre fits, measured in inches. This must match your wheel exactly.
Load Index
The maximum weight each tyre can carry. 91 means 615kg per tyre. You should never fit a tyre with a lower load index than your vehicle requires.
Speed Rating
The maximum sustained speed the tyre is rated for. V means up to 149mph. Never fit a tyre with a lower speed rating than your vehicle requires.
Where to find your tyre size
You have three easy options.
Tyre sidewall
Look at the side of any of your existing tyres. The size is printed in large text, for example 205/55 R16 91V.
Door sticker
Open the driver's door and look at the door frame or sill. Most cars have a sticker showing the recommended tyre size and pressures.
Vehicle handbook
Your car's owner manual will list the approved tyre sizes in the technical specifications section.
